GENERAL INFORMATION
ZIRCAR Alumina-Silica Insulation Type Z-500 is a rigid combination of specially processed refractory ceramic fiber, low surface area ceramic fillers and inorganic binders. In addition to high strength, low thermal conductivity and excellent non-wetting properties. Z-500 is uniformly rigidized and hard throughout its entire thickness. This facilitates its precision machining into complex shapes and configurations. No re-rigidizing is required after machining.
Z-500 has high density 50 lbs/ft³ (0.80 gm/cc), a fine
open pore structure, excellent thermal insulating properties, superior hot
strength and dimensional stability beyond 1000°C (1832°F). The
homogeneous microstructure and consistent binder distribution allow it to be machined to
tight exacting tolerances with ordinary shop tools and equipment. Superior machineability,
dimensional stability plus low heat capacity make it ideal for use as
furnace setters, supports
and process fixtures plus as a castertip.
Custom Z-500 is commonly supplied pre-machined to customer specifications. It's low thermal conductivity combined with excellent hot strength makes it a superior product for casting thin gauge aluminum.
Z-500 is pre-fired, contains no organic binders and will produce no smoke or odors when heated. It has excellent resistance to chemical attack and is not affected by oil or water. It can, however, be affected by hydrofluoric acid, phosphorous acid and strong alkalis.

Standard boards are available for immediate shipment from stock. Standard tolerances are +/- 1/8in. on length and width and +/- 1/16in. on thickness.
Custom boards and shapes ranging from a few cubic inches to 24in. wide x 36in. long x 2in. thick Can be manufactured.
Custom boards, shapes and preparations are
available on request. Our forming processes, large inventory of custom tooling and state
of the art machining techniques allow a wide variety of sizes and shapes to be made.
Special geometries such as disks, rings and custom-machined shapes and others can be
fabricated.
