GENERAL INFORMATION
ZIRCAR Alumina Insulations Types ZAL-15 and ZAL-15AA "All-Alumina" boards are high strength, uniform, rigid, refractory structures composed of alumina fibers and high purity inorganic binders. Both have an optimum fiber density of 15 lbs/ft³ (0.24 g/cc), fine open pore structure and excellent thermal insulating properties. ZAL-15 has superior hot strength and dimensional stability to 1550°C (2822°F) and withstands intermittent use to 1650°C (3002°F). ZAL-15AA has superior resistance to chemical attack and dimensional stability to 1500°C (2732°F).

The homogeneous microstructure and consistent binder distribution allow these materials to be machined to tight exacting tolerances with ordinary shop tools and equipment. Their superior machineability and dimensional stability plus low heat capacity make them ideal for use as setters, supports and process fixtures in both continuous and batch firing furnaces.

High purity silica is the binder in ZAL-15. Silica's strong bond gives ZAL-15 excellent high temperature strength and dimensional stability. ZAL-15AA "All Alumina" has a high purity alumina bond making it well suited to use in high vacuum and reducing atmosphere applications where silica cannot be tolerated, such as in bright annealing furnaces with H₂ atmospheres. They both have high electrical resistivity at elevated temperatures allowing them to be used in direct contact with many different resistance heating elements.

ZAL-15 and ZAL-15AA products are pre-fired, contain no organic binders and will produce no smoke or odors when heated. They show excellent resistance to chemical attack and are not affected by oil or water. They are, however, affected by hydrofluoric acid, phosphorous acid and strong alkalis.

Standard boards are available for immediate shipment from stock. Standard tolerances are +/- 1/8in. on length and width and +/- 1/16in. on thickness.

Boards are typically produced 18in. wide x 24in. long x ½ to 2in. thick and are readily made up to 24in. wide x 36in. long x 3in. thick . Custom boards and shapes smaller than a few cubic inches and larger than a cubic foot in volume have been manufactured.

Custom boards, shapes and preparations are available on request. Our forming processes, large inventory of custom tooling and state of the art machining techniques allow a wide variety of sizes and shapes to be made. Special geometries such as disks, rings and custom-machined shapes and others can be fabricated. Tight tolerance machining, compositional variations and the application of surface rigidizers and hardening agents are available.
